How to Remove Location from Photos on iPhone
Your iPhone records where every photo was taken and stores it inside the photo. To remove it, tap Options in the share sheet and turn off Location before you share, or open a photo’s Info and choose Adjust, then No Location. To stop saving location altogether, set the Camera’s location access to Never. Here’s each step.
Remove location before you share
This is the quickest fix and leaves the original photo alone:
- Open Photos and select the photo (or several).
- Tap the Share button.
- At the top of the share sheet, tap Options.
- Turn off Location. You can also turn off All Photos Data to remove other details like the camera model and date.
- Tap Done, then share as usual.
The photo you send has no location. The copy in your library keeps it, so you can still see your photos on a map.
To check a photo someone sent you, or a file on your computer, use our free photo location finder. It shows where the photo was taken and saves a copy without the location, all inside your browser.
Remove location from photos you already have
To strip the location from the photo itself:
- Open the photo in Photos.
- Swipe up, or tap the Info button (the i).
- Under the map, tap Adjust.
- Tap No Location.
For many photos at once: in your library, tap Select, choose the photos, tap the More button (three dots), then Adjust Location and No Location.
With iCloud Photos on, the change syncs to your other devices too.
Stop saving location in new photos
- Open Settings, then Privacy & Security.
- Tap Location Services, then Camera.
- Choose Never.
From now on, photos won’t record where they were taken. You’ll lose the Places map in Photos for new pictures, so some people prefer to keep it on and remove location only when sharing.
Why it matters
A photo’s location can be precise enough to show your home, your kids’ school or where you go every day. That matters most when you post photos publicly, sell things online, or share pictures with people you’ve just met. Many social networks remove location when you post, but photos sent by message, email or AirDrop can keep it unless you turn it off.
Keeping private photos private
Removing location protects what you share. For photos you don’t want anyone to see at all, also think about where they’re stored: anyone who unlocks your phone can scroll through Photos, and iCloud Photos copies them to your other devices. See how to hide photos on iPhone and how to turn off iCloud Photos.
For pictures that need their own lock, Easy Vault encrypts them on your iPhone or iPad behind a separate pattern or password and can delete the originals from Photos for you. When you share a photo back out of the vault, use the share sheet’s Options the same way to leave the location behind.
Frequently asked questions
How do I share a photo without its location on iPhone?
Select the photo in Photos and tap Share. At the top of the share sheet, tap Options, turn off Location, then tap Done and share as usual. The copy you send has no location; the photo in your library keeps it.
How do I remove the location from a photo I already took?
Open the photo in Photos and swipe up or tap the Info button. In the map section, tap Adjust, then choose No Location. To do several at once, select them, tap the More button, choose Adjust Location, then No Location.
How do I stop my iPhone from saving location in photos?
Go to Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, Camera, and choose Never. New photos won't have a location. Photos you already took keep theirs until you remove it.
Does sending a photo in Messages share the location?
It can. Photos sent in their original form can include where they were taken unless you turn Location off in the share sheet's Options first. Some apps, like many social networks, remove location when you post, but don't rely on it.
