Pixelate an image

Hide faces, license plates and anything else with a pixel blur. Free, simple, and your photo never leaves your device.

100% on your device. Your photo never leaves it.

How to pixelate a photo

  1. Choose a photo. JPEG, PNG, WebP or an iPhone HEIC photo.
  2. Drag a box over each face, plate, name or screen you want to hide. Add as many as you like.
  3. Set the strength. Bigger blocks hide more.
  4. Download. You get a copy; your original isn't changed.

Pixelate, blur or black box?

EffectLooks likeBest for
PixelateLarge colored squaresFaces, license plates, backgrounds
BlurSoft, out of focusFaces and backgrounds, when you want it to look natural
Black boxA solid blockText: ID numbers, addresses, names, passwords

You can switch effects at any time above. For a softer look, see blur part of a photo; for documents, redact an image.

Your photo stays on your device

Many online editors upload your photo to their servers. This one works inside your browser and saves the result straight back to your device. You can even turn off Wi-Fi after the page loads and it still works. The downloaded copy also leaves out the location and other hidden details your phone saved in the photo.

Before you share

  • Check reflections in windows, mirrors and glasses.
  • Look for details like house numbers, school logos, name badges and screens.
  • Check the location hidden in the original with the photo location finder.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pixelate part of an image?

Choose your photo above, keep Pixelate selected, and drag a box over each area you want to hide, like a face or a license plate. Adjust the strength, then tap Download photo. Tap Whole photo to pixelate everything.

Is this pixelate tool free and private?

Yes. It's free with no sign-up or watermark, and your photo is edited on your own device. It's never uploaded, because this site has no server that could receive it.

Can pixelated text be read back?

Sometimes. Researchers have shown that pixelated text, like passwords or ID numbers, can occasionally be reconstructed, especially with small blocks. For text, use Black box instead, which removes it completely.

Does it work with iPhone photos?

Yes, including HEIC photos straight from an iPhone. The edited copy is saved as a JPG (or PNG if you started with a PNG), without the location or other hidden details.

Can I undo a box?

Yes. Tap Undo to remove the last box. Your original photo is never changed; only the downloaded copy has the pixelation.
