Remove metadata from photos

Strip location, date, device and every other hidden detail from your photos before you share them. Free, no quality loss, and your photos never leave your device.

100% on your device. Your photo never leaves it.

Your photos stay on your device

Many online metadata tools upload your photo to their server to process it. This one doesn't. The code runs in your own browser, reads the file on your device and saves the clean copy straight back to it. There's no server behind this site that could receive a photo.

You don't have to take our word for it: once the page has loaded, turn off Wi-Fi or switch to airplane mode and use the tool. It works exactly the same.

What gets removed

RemovedKept
GPS location, altitude and directionThe image itself, pixel for pixel
Date, time and time zoneOrientation, so it stays the right way up
Phone or camera model, lens, serial numbersColour profile, so colours look the same
Editing software, names, copyright, captions, keywords
XMP and IPTC data, comments, embedded thumbnails

After cleaning, the tool reads the new file again and confirms that no location, date, device or names are left.

How it works

  1. Choose or drop your photos. You'll see everything they reveal, starting with the location.
  2. Tap Remove metadata and download. A clean copy is saved with "-clean" in its name. Your original isn't changed.
  3. Share the clean copy.

JPEG, PNG and WebP files are cleaned without re-encoding, so there's no quality loss. HEIC photos (the iPhone's default format) are saved as a high-quality JPEG; this works in Safari, while other browsers may need the photo converted to JPEG first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove metadata from a photo?

Choose the photo above and tap Remove metadata and download. You get a copy without the location, date, device, names and other EXIF, XMP and IPTC data. On iPhone you can also tap Share, then Options, and turn off All Photos Data before sharing.

Does removing EXIF data reduce image quality?

Not here, for JPEG, PNG and WebP: the tool removes the metadata sections and leaves the image data untouched, so the pixels are identical. HEIC and other formats are saved as a high-quality JPEG, because browsers can't rewrite those files directly.

What metadata does a photo contain?

Typically the GPS location, date and time, time zone, phone or camera model, lens, camera settings, and the software used to edit it. Some files also hold the owner name, camera serial number, captions, keywords and a unique ID.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and this site has no server that could receive your photos. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool still works.

Do social media sites remove metadata?

Most large social networks strip location and most EXIF data from photos when you post them. Email, AirDrop, cloud links and many messaging apps send the original file with its metadata, so remove it yourself before sharing that way.
