How to Recover Photos From a Photo Vault App (Forgot Passcode, Deleted App, New Phone)
Whether you can get photos back from a photo vault app depends on what went wrong and how the app stores and backs up photos. Forgot the passcode? Use the app’s recovery option. Deleted the app? You need a backup made before you deleted it. New phone? Restore from the app’s own backup. Start with the quick checks below, then follow the section for your situation.
First, check the easy places
Before anything else:
- Photos. If you never deleted the originals after importing them, they’re still in your library.
- Recently Deleted. In Photos, go to Utilities, then Recently Deleted. Deleted photos stay there for 30 days.
- Other devices and chats. Photos you sent through Messages, WhatsApp or email may still be in those conversations.
If you forgot your passcode
Every vault handles this differently:
- Recovery email or account. Many vault apps send a reset link to an email you gave at setup. Check that inbox, including spam.
- Security question. Some apps ask a question you chose when you set it up.
- Recovery key. Encrypted vaults that never hold your key give you a recovery key at setup instead. Enter it to get back in and set a new passcode.
- Decoy or fake passcode. If you set up a decoy, make sure you’re not typing the decoy passcode and seeing its empty vault.
If none of these exist, the developer’s support is the last stop. Be wary of anyone else offering to “unlock” a vault.
A vault that can’t be reset sounds unforgiving, but it’s the same property that keeps anyone else out. That’s why saving the recovery key matters.
If you deleted the vault app
Deleting an app on iPhone deletes everything the app stored on the phone. To get the photos back you need a copy from before you deleted it:
- The app’s own cloud backup. Reinstall the app and look for Restore or sign in with the account you used. This only works if backup was on.
- An iPhone backup. An iCloud or computer backup made before you deleted the app may include the vault’s data. Restoring means erasing your iPhone and restoring that backup, so you lose anything newer. Some vaults exclude their files from iPhone backups on purpose, so this doesn’t always work.
- Recently Deleted and chats. See the easy places above.
If you got a new iPhone
Move the vault before you erase or trade in the old phone:
- On the old phone, turn on the vault’s backup and let it finish.
- Install the app on the new phone and restore, usually with your account or a recovery key.
- Check that everything arrived, then erase the old phone.
If the old phone is already gone, the app’s cloud backup is the only route.
How to avoid this next time
In our study of 2,700 one-star vault app reviews, lost photos made up 27% of complaints in the past year. The causes are predictable; see why photo vault apps lose photos. In short:
- Save the recovery key or recovery email the day you set up the vault, somewhere other than the vault itself.
- Turn on encrypted backup, and check now and then that it’s recent.
- Before switching phones, restore on the new one first, then erase the old one.
Easy Vault is built around these steps: it shows a recovery key at setup, backs up to your own iCloud encrypted, and restores on a new iPhone with that key. More on how it keeps you safe, or read what to check in any vault app.
Frequently asked questions
Can I recover photos after deleting a photo vault app?
Only if they were backed up. Deleting an app deletes its storage on your iPhone. Check the app's own cloud backup (reinstall and sign in or restore), an iCloud or computer backup of your phone made before you deleted it, and whether the originals are still in Photos or Recently Deleted.
I forgot my photo vault passcode. How do I get back in?
Use the app's recovery option: a recovery email, security question or recovery key, depending on the app. Encrypted vaults that never had your key can only be opened with the recovery key you saved at setup.
Do photo vault apps back up to iCloud?
Some do, some don't, and some exclude their files from iPhone backups on purpose. Check the app's settings and help pages before you rely on it.
How do I move my photo vault to a new iPhone?
Use the app's own backup and restore, before you erase the old phone. Restoring the new iPhone from an iCloud backup brings the app back, but not always its photos.
