What 10,829 App Store Reviews Say About Photo Vault Apps (2026 Study)

One in four recent reviews of photo vault apps gives one star. We analyzed the 10,829 most recent US App Store reviews of 53 photo vault apps on October 31, 2026. The biggest complaint is money (27% of one-star reviews), but the most worrying is lost photos: 16% overall, and 27% of one-star reviews posted in the past year. Here’s what people complain about, how it has changed, and what to check before you trust an app with private photos.

Disclosure: we make Easy Vault, a photo vault app that isn’t included in this data. The study names no apps. Every figure comes from Apple’s public review feed, and you can download the complaint data and the ratings comparison. This is a follow-up to our photo vault app privacy report.

What one-star reviewers complain about

“Past 12 months” means one-star reviews posted from November 1, 2025 to October 30, 2026 (447 reviews).

1. Money is the top complaint

27% of one-star reviews are about payments: free trials that end without warning, apps that only reveal the price after you’ve imported photos, subscriptions that aren’t recognized after a reinstall, and ads that keep showing after paying to remove them.

The most upsetting version is losing access to your own photos when a subscription lapses. Several reviewers described having to pay just to view or export photos they had already stored. See photo vault app prices compared for what’s normal.

2. Lost photos are rising

16% of all one-star reviews describe lost photos or videos, but among one-star reviews from the past year it’s 27%, more than one in four. Add people locked out by a forgotten password or a broken login (5%), and about 1 in 5 one-star reviewers couldn’t get to their photos.

The common causes, in reviewers’ own descriptions: an update that wiped the vault, a new phone with no working backup, deleting and reinstalling the app, and passwords that can’t be recovered. We go through each in why photo vault apps lose photos.

Paying didn’t protect people: 1 in 5 reviewers who lost photos said they had a paid plan.

3. Updates break things

15% of one-star reviews blame an update (18% in the past year), and 100 reviews say an update cost them photos. Typical stories: the calculator disguise stopped accepting the passcode, videos stopped playing, or the vault opened empty.

4. Backups and new phones are a growing problem

Complaints about backups, restoring and moving to a new phone nearly doubled, from 6% of all one-star reviews to 11% in the past year. Many reviewers assumed their vault was backed up and found out it wasn’t when they changed phones.

5. Star ratings lag behind recent reviews

Of the 22 apps with at least 200 recent reviews, 10 averaged a full star or more lower in their most recent reviews than their listed App Store rating. Among the 16 apps listed at 4.5 stars or higher, 6 had a quarter or more of their recent reviews at one star. Listed ratings include years of older ratings, many collected by in-app prompts, so they change slowly. More in can you trust photo vault app ratings?

What to check before you trust a vault app

  1. Read the most recent reviews, not the star average. In the App Store, open Ratings & Reviews, tap See All and sort by Most Recent.
  2. A recovery plan that doesn’t depend on the company, such as a recovery key you keep. See how to recover photos from a photo vault app.
  3. A backup you control, ideally encrypted in your own iCloud, and test restoring it before you delete the originals from Photos.
  4. A way to get photos out (export or save back to Photos) that isn’t locked behind a subscription.
  5. What’s free and what you pay for, before you import anything.

Easy Vault, which we make, is built around that list: a recovery key shown at setup, an encrypted backup in your own iCloud that’s included free, sharing or saving photos back out at any time, and a free plan for up to 100 photos and files with no ads. See how it keeps you safe.

Methodology

  • Apps: the 69 photo vault apps from our October 2026 privacy report; 53 had US reviews in Apple’s feed.
  • Reviews: Apple’s public customer review feed for the US App Store, which returns up to the 500 most recent reviews per app. Collected October 31, 2026. Depending on how busy an app is, its reviews span anywhere from about two months to several years (the oldest is from 2013).
  • Categories: each review’s title and text were matched against keyword patterns for each complaint (for example, a loss word like “lost”, “gone” or “deleted” near “photos”, “videos” or “everything”), then checked by reading random samples. A review can fall into several categories. Only English text matches, so reviews in other languages count toward totals but no category.
  • Ratings comparison: apps with at least 200 recent reviews; listed rating is the App Store’s average rating; recent average is the mean of the reviews collected.
  • Limits: reviews are self-reported and unhappy users are more likely to write one; this measures what reviewers say, not how often problems happen.
  • Data: complaint categories and ratings vs recent reviews (apps anonymized). You’re welcome to cite or reuse them with a link to this page.
