Can You Trust Photo Vault App Ratings? Listed Stars vs Recent Reviews

A high star rating doesn’t mean a photo vault app is doing well right now. We compared the listed App Store rating of 22 photo vault apps with their 200 to 500 most recent reviews (October 31, 2026). 10 of the 22 averaged a full star or more lower in recent reviews, and among apps listed at 4.5 stars or higher, 6 of 16 had a quarter or more of recent reviews at one star.

From our study of 10,829 photo vault app reviews. We make Easy Vault, which isn’t included, and the study names no apps; the full comparison is anonymized.

Some apps hold steady: several listed at 4.7 to 4.8 also averaged above 4.5 in recent reviews. The gap is what to watch.

Why listed stars lag behind

  • They average years of ratings. An app with a million ratings barely moves when this month’s ratings drop.
  • Many ratings come from in-app prompts. Apps can ask for a star rating inside the app, usually at a happy moment, and those quick ratings outnumber written reviews.
  • Problems arrive suddenly. A bad update, a new paywall or a broken backup shows up in recent reviews weeks before it dents the average.

How to check a vault app’s recent reviews

  1. Open the app’s page in the App Store.
  2. Scroll to Ratings & Reviews and tap See All.
  3. Tap the sort button and choose Most Recent.
  4. Read the last few weeks. Look for lost photos, problems after an update, backup or new-phone trouble, and paying to see your own photos.

A few complaints are normal for any app. A cluster in the last few weeks, especially about lost photos, is the warning sign. Our study found lost photos in 27% of one-star vault reviews from the past year; see why photo vault apps lose photos.

Beyond the reviews

Reviews tell you how an app is behaving; they don’t tell you how it protects your photos. Also check:

Easy Vault, which we make, is new, so it doesn’t have years of ratings yet. We’d rather you judge it on what you can check: a Data Not Collected label, AES-256-GCM encryption, a recovery key and a free encrypted backup in your own iCloud. See how it keeps you safe.

Frequently asked questions

Are App Store ratings for photo vault apps reliable?

Not on their own. In October 2026, 10 of 22 photo vault apps with 200 or more recent reviews averaged at least a full star lower in their most recent reviews than their listed App Store rating. The listed rating includes years of older ratings, so it changes slowly.

Why are app ratings higher than recent reviews?

Listed ratings average every rating over time, including many star-only ratings collected by in-app prompts from happy users. Recent written reviews show what's happening now, such as a bad update or a new paywall.

How do I see the most recent App Store reviews?

Open the app's page in the App Store, scroll to Ratings & Reviews, tap See All, then tap the sort button and choose Most Recent.

What should I look for in photo vault app reviews?

Look for recent reviews about lost photos, problems after updates, backups or new phones, and paywalls on your own photos. One or two are normal; a pattern in the last few weeks is a warning sign.
