Why Photo Vault Apps Lose Photos: 5 Causes From 2,700 One-Star Reviews

Losing photos is one of the most common complaints about photo vault apps, and it’s growing. In our study of 2,706 one-star App Store reviews of 53 vault apps, 16% described lost photos or videos, and in the past 12 months it was 27%, more than one in four. Reviewers point to the same five causes again and again, and each one is avoidable.

From our study of 10,829 photo vault app reviews (October 2026). We make Easy Vault, which isn’t included in the data, and the study names no apps.

About 1 in 5 one-star reviewers couldn’t get to their photos at all, lost or locked out. And 1 in 5 of those who lost photos said they had paid for the app.

1. An update broke or emptied the vault

100 one-star reviews blame an app update for lost photos. The vault opened empty, videos stopped playing, or a disguised app (like a fake calculator) stopped accepting the passcode.

Protect yourself: keep a working backup before you update the app or iOS, and glance at the most recent reviews when a new version comes out.

2. A new phone, and no working backup

Complaints about backups, restoring and new phones nearly doubled in the past year, from 6% to 11% of one-star reviews. Many people assumed their vault moved with their phone or was in the cloud, and found out it wasn’t.

Protect yourself: turn on the vault’s own backup, then actually test a restore. Don’t assume your iPhone backup covers it: apps can exclude their files from iPhone backups, and restoring a whole-phone backup isn’t always an option.

3. The app was deleted or reinstalled

Deleting an iPhone app deletes everything it stored on the phone. Reviewers describe deleting a vault by accident, or reinstalling to fix a bug, and finding it empty.

Protect yourself: never delete or reinstall a vault app until you’ve confirmed a backup. If it’s already happened, see how to recover photos from a photo vault app.

4. A forgotten password with no way back

5% of one-star reviews are from people locked out: a forgotten PIN, a reset that stopped working, or a login the company won’t help with.

Protect yourself: when you set up a vault, save its recovery option (a recovery key, email or security question) somewhere safe, such as a password manager. Encrypted vaults can only be opened with what you saved; that’s the point of encryption, but it means the recovery key matters.

5. A subscription ended, and access went with it

Some reviewers lost access to photos they had stored when a trial or subscription ended, and had to pay to view or export them.

Protect yourself: before importing anything, check what the free version allows, and make sure you can always get your photos out. Compare plans in photo vault app prices compared.

A quick safety checklist

  1. Backup on, and a test restore done.
  2. Recovery key or details saved outside the app.
  3. Export works: you can save photos back to Photos.
  4. Recent reviews read, sorted by Most Recent. See can you trust photo vault app ratings?
  5. Originals deleted only after the backup is confirmed.

Easy Vault, which we make, was designed around these failure points: an encrypted iCloud backup in your own account that’s free on every plan, a recovery key shown at setup that restores your vault on a new iPhone, and sharing or saving photos back out at any time. See how it keeps you safe.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my photo vault app lose my photos?

The most common causes reviewers describe are an app update that broke or emptied the vault, moving to a new phone without a working backup, deleting and reinstalling the app, a forgotten password with no way to recover it, and a subscription lapse that locked access to stored photos.

How common is losing photos in a vault app?

In a study of 2,706 one-star App Store reviews of 53 photo vault apps (October 2026), 16% described lost photos or videos, rising to 27% of one-star reviews posted in the previous 12 months. It measures complaints, not how often it happens to all users.

Does deleting a photo vault app delete the photos?

Yes. Deleting an iPhone app deletes everything it stored on the phone. Unless the vault has its own backup, or your iPhone backup includes it, the photos are gone. Always confirm a backup works before deleting the app or the originals in Photos.

How do I keep photos safe in a vault app?

Turn on the app's backup and test restoring it, keep the recovery key or recovery details somewhere safe, keep the app updated but back up before big iOS updates, and make sure you can export photos out of the app before relying on it.
